Compliance with GIPS enhances the reputation of all asset managers, even those whose market isn't necessarily calling for compliance. With the Madoff scandal still a topic of interest, clients want some assurance that their managers are legitimate. Granted, while verification isn't technically designed to detect fraud, the process is still quite helpful. Picking the right verifier is also important, given the increased scrutiny of this profession given the recent revelations of firms having been verified but actually not complying (and, in fact, committing fraud). I comment regularly on GIPS on my blog (http://investmentperformanceguy.blogspot.com/) as well as in our monthly newsletter.
